The use of hot stones can be traced back  to ancient civilisations where they would be used to warm their homes an in rituals. Indian and Mayan cultures show hot stones being used in Ayurvedic traditions. Healers would gather stones from the river beds and warm them on the fires, then place them on cloth along the energy centres of the body and a healing process would commence. The stones demonstrated an ability to relax the muscles and draw out the pain. Native Americans have also been using hot stones in their sweat lodge ceremonies for centuries.
